OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS, GRAPHIC DESIGN FESTIVAL SCOTLAND (GDFS) HAS SOLIDIFIED ITSELF AS THE GO-TO EVENT TO SEE SOME OF THE UK’S BEST INTERNATIONAL TALENT IN GRAPHIC DESIGN. TO MARK HALF A DECADE OF GDFS WE COLLABORATED WITH THE FESTIVAL’S FOUNDERS, WARRIORS STUDIO TO CREATE AN IDENTITY CELEBRATING ITS FIFTH BIRTHDAY.
With such a playful concept, we agreed a palette of black, silver, grey and white would create a serious and refined aesthetic contrast. Balloons became a central visual motif with things getting a little meta when we screen printed Max R. Kaufman’s font ‘Balloon’ on real party balloons.
WITH THE COLOUR PALETTE AND STYLE OF TYPOGRAPHY AGREED WE EXPLORED LAYOUTS USING THE VARIOUS BRAND ELEMENTS. THIS HELPED INFORM THE FINAL IDENTITY PROGRESSED BY WARRIORS STUDIO.
Alongside a birthday card style programme guide with a pin badge attached there was a suite of animated illustrations of jelly, hats, badges, balls and streamers. These visual assets helped frame the identity and became vehicles for announcing speakers and programme events.
