Glasgow School of Art 2019

Open Studio at Glasgow School of Art is a programme of short courses in art, design and making – comprising of weekend, Summer school, and kids’ courses during the holidays.

We’ve been working with the Glasgow School of Art – Scotland’s only public, self-governing art school – since we were founded in 2017. In 2018, we were asked to create the campaign creative, which needed to be fresh, unique and in keeping with their modern and stylish aesthetic. Not only that, it needed to maintain the client’s reputation of continuing to produce work that pushes creative boundaries.

For 2019, we were asked to evolve the design for this year’s city-wide campaign. Using the same colour palette and typeface, we kept the creative in line with last year’s communication – but wanted a different look and feel to really grab attention.

With posters in both print and digital across Glasgow – predominantly the Subway – we played with the type as our main concept, keeping the information as large and prominent as possible. We built up layers of type with the circles working as an opening or window, using the ‘o’ in ‘open’ as a device.


We really enjoyed working with Cause & Effect on the Open Studio campaign. They responded creatively to the brief, and created visuals that felt fresh and contemporary. We especially appreciated how they developed the visuals to create a coherent sub-brand. And we loved the additional digital posters that were created this year, that we used on digital billboards across the city. They were fun, eye-catching, upped our presence and made our campaign stand out from the crowd.
